Claude, AI, and Why Banks Are Getting Nervous About Cybersecurity

Amongst most other sectors, AI is quickly reshaping the financial world. Financial institutions such as Banks are using it for everything from customer service to fraud detection. One of the key players is Anthropic’s Claude, a powerful AI model that can analyse and write code, making it very useful for cybersecurity.

But there’s a catch: the same AI that can protect systems can also be used to attack them.

When AI starts acting like a hacker

Claude is extremely good at spotting weaknesses in software. That’s great for Cyber security defence, but it also means it could be used to find and exploit those weaknesses.

Recent reports suggest advanced versions can identify vulnerabilities across systems very quickly. Earlier versions were even targeted by hacking groups trying to use them in real cyberattacks.

In short, AI is making cyberattacks faster, cheaper, and easier to scale.

Why are Financial Institutions worried?

Traditional FI instutions are particularly exposed for a few reasons:

  • Old systems: Many still rely on legacy tech with hidden vulnerabilities
  • High stakes: They hold money and sensitive data
  • Interconnected networks: One breach can spread quickly

The BBC today are reporting key concerns from Finance Ministers globally. If multiple banks use similar systems, AI could uncover the same weaknesses across all of them massively raising the risk of large-scale attacks.

A growing concern for regulators

Regulators are taking this seriously. Central banks are already stress-testing how AI-driven cyberattacks could impact the financial system.

There’s concern this could go beyond individual breaches and create wider financial instability.

At the same time, banks are being encouraged to use AI defensively, to find and fix problems before attackers do.

The bottom line

Banks can’t avoid AI as they need it to keep up with modern threats. But it’s a double-edged sword.

We’re moving into an “AI vs AI” world, where the same technology is being used on both sides of the fight.

The real challenge now isn’t just adopting AI, it’s controlling how it’s used and staying ahead of the risks.
